Why We Named It VITRUM: A Word as Old as Glass Itself
Names matter. They carry associations, set expectations and (when they're chosen well) say something true about what they represent. The name VITRUM is one of those names.
The Latin Root
Vitrum is the Latin word for glass. It's a word with genuine historical weight, used by Roman glassblowers and craftspeople for centuries to describe the material they worked with every day. It was the word ancient architects and artisans reached for when they spoke about one of the most transformative materials in human history.
That history matters to us. When our product is made from up to 86% glass, naming it after glass isn't just accurate, it's honest. And honesty, in a business built on direct relationships with WA builders and homeowners, has always been our baseline.
Why the Old Word Works for a New Product
There's something intentional about reaching back to a classical root for a product that represents the future of safe surfaces. VITRUM isn't just a modern product, it's a material choice that has real heritage. Glass has been refined, perfected and reinvented over thousands of years. Our surfaces are the latest expression of that long lineage.
The name also avoids the noise of the modern naming landscape. It doesn't overstate. It doesn't promise things it can't deliver. It simply names what our product fundamentally is (glass) and trusts that the product will do the rest of the talking.
The Clean Break From QSTONE and From Stone Itself
Keeping the QStone name was never seriously on the table once we had rebuilt our product. QStone was associated with a specific era of our business - before the regulations, before the reformulation, before the glass-resin composition existed for us. It also had 'stone' baked into the name and this was no longer a stone product. Using the old name for the new product would have been confusing at best and misleading at worst.
VITRUM gave our product its own identity. A clean slate. A name that belonged entirely to this new thing we'd made, with no legacy associations muddying the story.
What the Name Signals to the Market
To a builder or designer encountering our brand for the first time, VITRUM signals quality without pretension. It's not a made-up word. It's not a string of letters designed to sound premium. It has meaning and that meaning is directly connected to what's inside every slab.
For us, VITRUM was also a commitment. A commitment to the glass-resin formula, to silica-free manufacturing and to building a surface brand that could carry those values forward clearly and credibly.
A Name Carried Into a New Chapter
Our Instagram handle @vitrumsurfaces (by QStone), still carries that footnote, a quiet acknowledgement of where we came from. But the product, the positioning and the purpose are firmly under the new name.
VITRUM. Latin for glass. Made in the image of what a modern, safe, design-forward surface should be.
In the final part of this series, we look at VITRUM today - our ranges, our showroom, and what comes next.
